Glammertime - In de gloria - Netflix

In de gloria (“In the glory”) was a 2000-2001 Flemish TV sketch comedy show, directed by Jan Eelen and produced by the company Woestijnvis. It was a mockumentary series which satirized reality television and human interest shows, especially the way regular people are exploited by media. The show ran on the Belgian public TV channel Canvas for two seasons of 10 episodes each. In Flanders itself the series enjoys a high popularity and much critical praise, with several sketches having gained classic status. Despite the local popularity the show has never been exported.

Glammertime - Internet notoriety - Netflix

In 2006 one of the sketches, “Boemerang” (Boomerang) gained notoriety on YouTube. It features the host of a talk show, “Boemerang”, breaking into fits of giggles after hearing the voice of one of his guests, who spoke in a squeaky manner due to a failed tonsillectomy. The video uploader who added English subtitles to the footage implied the footage was real and shortened it especially to remove all indications of it being fake. The full sketch shows the TV host in a supposed archive TV show (hence the title Boemerang) looking back on the infamous moment that got him fired in the past. All people in the footage are actors. The show's host, Erik Hartman, is played by Tom Van Dyck, his two guests Valère and Marijke are portrayed by Lucas Van den Eynde and An Miller. It quickly became an Internet meme among foreigners who mistook it for being real. In September 2006 the YouTube clip was even shown during The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Star Channel news, with both hosts announcing it as being real. Part of the Boemerang sketch were also featured in an Argentinian television advertisement for Quilmes beer, titled Risas (laughs), where Hartman is seen laughing.

Beauty & de Nerd - Bridget Maasland - Netflix

Bridget Maasland is a Dutch VJ, television presenter and producer.

Beauty & de Nerd - Career - Netflix

She worked as a model and appeared on the catwalk in fashionshows for children. Her debut on television was a commercial for fruit as a healthy alternative to sweets. Later, Maasland became a professional model, working in Barcelona. She returned in 1993 to the Netherlands to become a showdancer and assistant in the Veronica show, Man O Woman. She started working for TMF where she gained popularity as a VJ and presenter. Five years later, she left the music station as one of the last presenters of the first wave to start working for the Dutch National TV station BNN. BNN is especially targeted at a young audience, and her sexy profile fitted the bill perfectly. She presented shows like Lijst 0 (politics with a sexy twist, together with Katja Schuurman), Een Beetje Bridget, BNN At Work, Neuken doe ik veel! (explicit sex education), The national IQ test, The Bridget Triangle, BNN presenteert AVRO's Sterrenslag and Katja vs. Bridget. For a more universal audience, she interviewed the teams in both series of the Dutch version of Robot Wars (the role Philippa Forrester and, when she was off, Julia Reed and Jayne Middlemiss, had in the main (UK) version of the Robot Combat gameshow). In the first series a team named Blue, who dyed their skin blue prior to the event, communicated only by handing notes to her, or with their mouthpiece. After a couple of years with BNN, she decided in 2005 to move over to the newly formed commercial station, Talpa of John de Mol, where she gained the possibility to produce television shows herself. However, her first job was to present Big Brother 5 together with Ruud de Wild. A year later she presented Big Brother 6 on her own. In May 2006, she appeared in the Dutch edition of Playboy, with the proceeds going to the Dutchpuppy charity. Other shows have included her own production, Je leven in de steigers (based on Extreme Home Makeover), the news program NSE, Woef! (own production about dog training), the talk show Late Night met Maasland & Geel and Hoe word ik een Gooische Vrouw? (a satirical take on how to become and behave ladylike). In the end of 2007 Bridget moved over to the commercial station RTL Nederland because Talpa officially ceased to exist. On 27 August Bridget's new show “Hoe Word Ik Een New Yorkse Vrouw?” started. It has the same concept as “Hoe Word Ik Een Gooische Vrouw?” She also replaced Renate Verbaan in the second season of Beauty & de Nerd.[1]. Because Bridget and het boy friend Pepijn Padberg were expecting their first child in 2008, she came with the production “Hoe word ik mama in Amsterdam-Zuid?.[2]”. Since 2007 Bridget regularly presents the tabloid RTL Boulevard, where she replaces Albert Verlinde. She also presents the programma Lekker Slim!. On 17 December 2009 it was announced that Bridget had broken up with Pepijn Padberg.[3] From September 2010 until February 2011 [4] she was going steady with Johnny de Mol. In September 2011 it was announced that she has a relationship with company lawyer Pieter van Schaik who is ten years her junior. However, on Monday 16 April 2012 on RTL Boulevard TV she announced that she had terminated this relationship. From 3 January 2011 Bridget Maasland has been acting the bitchy Carla in the BNN-series Walhalla. At RTL 5 she is one of the presenters of the new program Wie is de Reisleider?, that was seen from January on. On 21 May 2011 Maasland was laureated with the Amsterdam Fashion Award during the Amsterdam Fashion Gala.

Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden - Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten - Netflix

Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten (English: Good Times, Bad Times) is a long-running German television soap opera, first broadcast on RTL in 1992. The programme concerns the lives of a fictional neighborhood in Germany's capital city Berlin. Over the years the soap opera tends to have an overhaul of young people in their late teens and early twenties, targeting a young viewership. Based on the Australian format The Restless Years, which first was successfully adapted in the Netherlands as Goede tijden, slechte tijden, the German version took the scripts of the first 230 episodes, even though heavily rewritten, from the original. After the first year, Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten started using original material. The programme started off with low ratings and was panned by critics. However the network believed in the success of the show and by the autumn of 1993, a serial killer storyline helped to improve the ratings, making GZSZ a success. It not only won its time slot but became also one of the highest-rated programmes, normally ranking in the Top 10 ratings of the day. In 2002, the soap opera reached its peak with over seven million viewers turning in for the 2500th episode. Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten has tackled with issues like homosexuality, incest, rape, drug addiction, various crimes, breast cancer, bulimia, underage drinking, adoption and mental illnesses. Frank-Thomas Mende and Lisa Riecken were the last original cast members when leaving the show in 2010. Wolfgang Bahro, who joined the show in February 1993, has become the longest-serving actor on the show since. Other long-serving actors are Daniel Fehlow, who joined the show in 1996 but has since taken several breaks, and Felix von Jascheroff, who's part of the programme since 2001. Ulrike Frank is currently the longest-serving female cast member, being part of the soap opera in her current role since 2002. GZSZ launched several successful careers in the music industry. The first being original cast member Andreas Elsholz. The most successful ones were Jeanette Biedermann and Yvonne Catterfeld, who both left the soap opera at the peak of their careers.

Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden - Parody - Netflix

In the German comedy series Freitag Nacht News, they had a sketch called Schlechte Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten (Bad Times, Bad Times or SZSZ) which was a parody of the soap opera. The sketch featured four men who lived together in an apartment, and suffered from severe depression. In every sketch, they kill each other but often kill themselves. Although three of the characters were unnamed, the fourth person was named Clive, whose face was never seen. He is always shown dead in every sketch, mostly hanging himself.

Radar - AN/APY-10 - Netflix

The AN/APY-10 is an American multifunction radar developed for the U.S. Navy's Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft. AN/APY-10 is the latest descendant of a radar family originally developed by Texas Instruments (TI, and later Raytheon when it acquired the radar business of TI) for Lockheed P-3 Orion, the predecessor of P-8. AN/APY-10 mechanically scanned radar is a development of Raytheon's AN/APS-149 radar. Compared to the AN/APS-137, it is smaller in size, lighter, and uses less power. The radar is optimized for maritime, littoral and overland surveillance. The AN/APY-10 is able to provide high resolution radar images in both overland and water modes. Available modes include color weather, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR), periscope detection, and navigation. ISAR mode is said to be capable of both detecting, imaging and classifying surface targets at long range using a variety of resolutions.

Radar - AN/APS-124 - Netflix

Knowledge gained in the development of AN/APS-115/116 is used in the development of X-band AN/APS-124, the first model in the radar family developed for ASW helicopters. Due to the adoption of the traveling wave tube (TWT), the peak power is significantly increased to 350 kW. Due to the size and weight constraint, the parabolic antenna of radars for fixed aircraft is replaced by a 72-inch x 12 inch slotted planar array antenna for AN/APS-124, and scan rate is 6 or 12 rpm, with 120 rpm for weather. The array of AN/APS-124 produces a 1.2 x 20 degrees beam, and the typical range against a 1 square meter target is 16 nm in comparison to 20 nm of AN/APS-115/116. AN/APS-124 is installed on Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk.

Battle on the Dancefloor - The Chemical Brothers - Netflix

The Chemical Brothers are an English electronic music duo composed of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, originating in Manchester in 1989. Along with The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, The Crystal Method, and fellow acts, they were pioneers at bringing the big beat genre to the forefront of pop culture. In the United Kingdom they have had six number one albums and 13 top 20 singles, including two number ones.

Battle on the Dancefloor - Live - Netflix

The Chemical Brothers' live shows comprise large screens displaying psychedelic images, strobe lights, and lasers that project over the crowd. There has been speculation over how much of their live gigs are pre-recorded, although they insist (on their official website FAQ) that they have a mere outline of track order and the rest is mixed live. This would seem to be confirmed by the audience who have seen gigs on consecutive nights and have posted notable differences between the sets played. The Brothers have also played at many major festivals, including Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, HFStival and the Reading and Leeds festivals. They currently hold the record for most gigs performed in a year at the Brixton Academy. The Brothers have, despite their high status in the mainstream, never appeared on Top of the Pops, with the use of music videos to replace the performance, sometimes accompanied by a video apologising for their absence. In 1999, a live US tour video of “Hey Boy, Hey Girl” was shown, even though the song was not in the top 40 at the time, and also released other singles before then at the time. In addition to performing their own music, they also hold regular DJ nights where they mix other artists' tracks (in the style of Brothers Gonna Work It Out). The band normally use vocal samples in their live shows, however, they have occasionally incorporated guest vocalists into their live performances. Notable appearances have included Bernard Sumner of New Order, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, and Tim Burgess.

SOS: Survival of the Sexes - Lambda phage - Netflix

Enterobacteria phage λ (lambda phage, coliphage λ) is a bacterial virus, or bacteriophage, that infects the bacterial species Escherichia coli (E. coli). It was discovered by Esther Lederberg in 1950 when she noticed that streaks of mixtures of two E. coli strains, one of which treated with ultraviolet light, was “nibbled and plaqued”. The wild type of this virus has a temperate lifecycle that allows it to either reside within the genome of its host through lysogeny or enter into a lytic phase (during which it kills and lyses the cell to produce offspring); mutant strains are unable to lysogenize cells – instead, they grow and enter the lytic cycle after superinfecting an already lysogenized cell. The phage particle consists of a head (also known as a capsid), a tail, and tail fibers (see image of virus below). The head contains the phage's double-strand linear DNA genome. During infection, the phage particle recognizes and binds to its host, E. coli, causing DNA in the head of the phage to be ejected through the tail into the cytoplasm of the bacterial cell. Usually, a “lytic cycle” ensues, where the lambda DNA is replicated and new phage particles are produced within the cell. This is followed by cell lysis, releasing the cell contents, including virions that have been assembled, into the environment. However, under certain conditions, the phage DNA may integrate itself into the host cell chromosome in the lysogenic pathway. In this state, the λ DNA is called a prophage and stays resident within the host's genome without apparent harm to the host. The host is termed a lysogen when a prophage is present. This prophage may enter the lytic cycle when the lysogen enters a stressed condition.

SOS: Survival of the Sexes - Induction - Netflix

The classic induction of a lysogen involved irradiating the infected cells with UV light. Any situation where a lysogen undergoes DNA damage or the SOS response of the host is otherwise stimulated leads to induction. The host cell, containing a dormant phage genome, experiences DNA damage due to a high stress environment, and starts to undergo the SOS response. RecA (a cellular protein) detects DNA damage and becomes activated. It is now RecA, a highly specific co-protease. Normally RecA binds LexA (a transcription repressor), activating LexA auto-protease activity, which destroys LexA repressor, allowing production of DNA repair proteins. In lysogenic cells, this response is hijacked, and RecA* stimulates cI autocleavage. This is because cI mimics the structure of LexA at the autocleavage site. Cleaved cI can no longer dimerise, and loses its affinity for DNA binding. The PR and PL promoters are no longer repressed and switch on, and the cell returns to the lytic sequence of expression events (note that cII is not stable in cells undergoing the SOS response). There is however one notable difference.

Studio PowNed - Somebody That I Used to Know - Netflix

“Somebody That I Used to Know” is a song written by Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter Gotye, featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra. The song was released in Australia and New Zealand by Eleven Music on 5 July 2011 as the second single from Gotye's third studio album, Making Mirrors (2011). It was later released by Universal Music in December 2011 in the United Kingdom, and in January 2012 in the United States and Ireland. “Somebody That I Used To Know” was written and recorded by Gotye at his parents' house on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and is lyrically related to the experiences he has had with relationships. “Somebody That I Used to Know” is a mid-tempo ballad. It samples Luiz Bonfá's instrumental “Seville” from his 1967 album Luiz Bonfa Plays Great Songs. The song received a positive reception from critics, who noted the similarities between the song and works by Sting, Peter Gabriel, and American folk band Bon Iver. In Australia, the song won the Triple J Hottest 100 poll at the end of 2011, as well as ARIA Awards for song of the year and best video, while Kimbra was voted best female artist and Gotye was named best male artist and producer of the year. The song came ninth in the Triple J Hottest 100 of the Past 20 Years, 2013. In 2013, the song won two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Record of the Year. Commercially, “Somebody That I Used to Know” is Gotye's most successful and signature song. It has topped charts in the US, UK, and Australia, as well as 23 other national charts, and reached the top 10 in more than 30 countries around the world. The song has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling digital singles of all time. It was also placed at the top of a number of year-end charts by Billboard Magazine (including the Hot 100, Adult Pop Songs, and Alternative Songs) and other record chart companies around the world. “Somebody That I Used To Know” has been performed several times on major US TV shows such as The Voice, American Idol, and Saturday Night Live. It was covered by Canadian indie rock group Walk off the Earth using a single guitar played simultaneously by all five band members and by actors Darren Criss and Matt Bomer in the Glee episode “Big Brother”. The hit song's accompanying music video was directed by Australian artist Natasha Pincus. The video, which has received over one billion views on YouTube as of January 2018, premiered on 5 July 2011. It shows Gotye and Kimbra naked against a white backdrop. While they sing, a pattern of paint gradually covers their skin and the backdrop via stop motion animation.

“Somebody That I Used To Know” has been covered by several artists including a cappella group Pentatonix who created a viral YouTube video in February 2012 and released the track on their EP, “PTX Volume 1” on 26 June 2012 In addition Ingrid Michaelson, The Fergies, and Sam Tsui have covered the song. In February 2012, Rita Ora covered the song at BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. A cover by Right the Stars featuring Karmina, which was also uploaded to YouTube, was recommended by Miley Cyrus. Dutch DJ Tiësto remixed the song for his album Club Life: Volume Two Miami. Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone covered the song on the eleventh season of American Idol on 11 April 2012. In February 2012, Gotye made his American television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he performed the song. The song has since been featured on the TV series 90210, Gossip Girl, and The Voice of Ireland by Andy Mac Unfraidh. The song was featured in the film Boyhood. On 16 May 2012, fun. along with Paramore's front vocalist Hayley Williams covered the song at BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. On 23 May 2012, Internet cartoon band Your Favorite Martian did a cover of the song. “Somebody That I Used To Know” was also first played live by Coheed and Cambria on 29 April 2012, as a frequent feature on their 2012 headlining tour. In May 2012, American duo Karmin made a cover of the song on Sirius XM Hits. The song was covered in the Glee episode “Big Brother” and performed by Darren Criss (as Blaine Anderson) and Matt Bomer (as Cooper Anderson). It sold 152,000 digital downloads in its first week of release and debuted on the Digital Songs chart at number 10 and the Hot 100 at number 26. Samples of the song were also used in ODESZA's Without You. Gotye paid tribute to the overwhelming number of cover versions of the song by personally creating a video remix, released in August 2012, using segments from hundreds of online covers to create a new, unique version of the track, titled “Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra”. Gotye states the concept “was directly inspired here by Kutiman's Thru-You project”, released in March 2009, which edited numerous YouTube videos to create a new cohesive song. A similar mixing style is seen in the performance of “Since U Been Gone” in the September 2012 film release Pitch Perfect. “Weird Al” Yankovic recorded a cover as part of his polka medley “NOW That's What I Call Polka!” for his 2014 album Mandatory Fun.

Hart tegen Hard - Koos de la Rey - Netflix

General Jacobus Herculaas de la Rey (22 October 1847 – 15 September 1914), usually known as Koos de la Rey, was a prominent Boer general during the Second Boer War. He is generally regarded as one of the most able and personally bravest leaders of said war. De la Rey also had a political career and was one of the leading figures of Boer independence. As a guerrilla, his tactics proved extremely successful. De la Rey opposed the war until the last, but when he was once accused of cowardice during a Volksraad session by President Paul Kruger, he replied that if the time for war came, he would be fighting long after Paul Kruger had given up and fled for safety. This proved to be the case.

Hart tegen Hard - Political career - Netflix

In 1907 De la Rey was elected to the colonial Transvaal Parliament, and he was one of the delegates to the National Convention which led to the Union of South Africa in 1910. He became a Senator and supported Louis Botha, the first Prime Minister, in his attempts to unite Boer and British. An opposing faction led by Hertzog wished to establish republican government as soon as possible and resisted co-operation with the British. Serious violence broke out in 1914 when white miners on the Rand clashed with police and troops over the use of black miners. De la Rey commanded the government forces and the strikes were put down, but a dangerous atmosphere had formed.

Gamekings - Herald: An Interactive Period Drama - Netflix

Herald is a single-player adventure video game, or “interactive period drama”, for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux. It was the first game released by Wispfire, a Dutch indie studio located in the Dutch Game Garden, Utrecht. The company was founded by creative director Bart Heijltjes, writer Roy van der Schilden, artist Aïda de Ridder, and programmer Remko Haagsma. On March 31, 2017, Wispfire released a Patch that allows Herald to be play on Xbox 360, XBox One and the Sony Dualshock 4 for PlayStation 4. As a mix of between an adventure game and a visual novel, Herald is a choice-driven adventure game with a branching narrative, where the player can choose how the main protagonist, Devan Rensburg, behaves and interacts with other characters, thus effecting the storyline. Herald is episodic, with Book I and II were released on February 22, 2017, for Steam, GOG, Humble, and itch.io Stores. Book III and IV will tell the rest of Devan's voyage on the HLV Herald and is already in pre-production and is scheduled to be released at a later date. On February 6, 2015, while still in development, Herald won the “Indie Prize Showcase for Best Narrative” and nominated for “Best Art” at Casual Connect, Amsterdam. Due to its theme on colonialism and other social and political issues, VALUE, a research group that studies the intersections of archaeology and video games, includes a chapter written by Roy van der Schilden and Bart Heijltjes about Herald and how Wispfire used history to create the game in their original book The Interactive Past.

Gamekings - Reception - Netflix

Herald received mostly positive to moderate reviews, being praise for its plot, themes, voice acting, 2D art, and diverse characters. However, its 3D graphics, story pacing, and narrative branch gameplay are met with criticism. Even when it was still in development, the game receives positive feedback for their demo version, such as PopMatters praising Herald for its graphics and its gameplay for capturing the “mood with breadth rather than striving for particularities, and ultimately it is better for doing so.” Aggregating review website Metacritic calculated an average score of 77 out of 100 based on 7 reviews, indicating “generally favorable reviews.” Within the Dutch community, Herald receives positive reception, Gamekings and GameCensor both gave Herald a positive reviews. The Dutch branch of IGN giving the game a rating of 9 and saying that “Rarely do form, content and gameplay combine so effectively to make such a complete artwork as Herald.” Italian video game magazine The Games Machine rated Herald with a score of 80, saying “Herald: An Interactive Period Drama lives up to its name: it's an exciting adventure on the sea, with a lot of meaningful choices and a compelling story.” Independent French blog Graal awards Herald with a 5/5 star rating. GameSkinny awards Herald with a 10/10 score, praising it for “touching on subjects that few games would ever dare to” and being “wonderful blend of point and click adventure mixed with player choice that creates an intense story with complex characters and tough decisions.” The Guardian rated Herald with a 4/5 score, comparing some elements of the game to Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon. The Overpowered Noobs praised Herald for its “cast of complex, interesting, and incredibly voiced characters, beautifully captivating art design, and a fresh and fun story,” and rated it with 9/10 score. End World Gaming rated Herald with a 95/100 score, praising the storyline of Book I and II. HighEnd Gamer rated the game with a 4.5/5 for its “brilliant twisting story that is expertly delivered,” voice acting, “engrossing and believable” world, and characters. GameSpew gives Herald an 8/10 rating, calling “Herald is a fantastic experience. Its deeply colourful world full of classic mystery and adventure is an absolute must for any fan of interactive storytelling to explore.” Player2Reviews rates Herald with a 8.5/10, praising its themes, cast, and 2D graphics, but dislikes the 3D models. GameGrin gives Herald an 8/10 and Twinfinite scores 4/5 for its story and art. Polygon gave a positive review for Herald, calling the first two books “novel-like in its sensibilities and in its literary quality” and “offers cool-headed insights into another way of living, and into the way we live today. It's engaging, and it has something vital to say.” Kill Screen praises it take on the theme of identity, saying “Herald reminds us that—no matter where you say you're from—we're all part of a larger story that's much more complicated.” UK website Invision Community scores Herald 7/10 and considers it " a powerful voyage into racism, sexism and any other social division that was all the rage at the turn of the 19th century," though acknowledges “Herald won’t be everybody’s cup of grog” due to its “inconsistent narrative and lack of visual variety”. One Angry Gamer highly recommended it to players who enjoy story-driven point-and-click adventure games, and commends the plot, characters, and 2D graphics, comparing it to the Telltale Games or the Broken Sword series. The Nerdx's Holly Swainyard plays the game at the EGX Rezzard 2017 trade fair and compliments Herald for being a “beautifully made and designed period adventure.”

Evelien - Cub (film) - Netflix

Cub (original title: Welp) is a 2014 Belgian horror movie and the feature film directorial debut of Jonas Govaerts. Funds for Cub were partially raised through an IndieGoGo campaign and the film had its world premiere on 10 September 2014 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Filming took place during 2013 and stars Maurice Luijten as Sam, a young boy that goes on a camping trip with his fellow Cub Scouts, only to fall afoul of a bloodthirsty poacher.

Evelien - Reception - Netflix

Critical reception for Cub has been mixed, and the Belgian motion picture rating board received some criticism for giving the movie an “all ages” rating. The Scouts en Gidsen Vlaanderen, the Flemish Boy Scouts organization, issued a statement where they condemned the “all ages” rating and cautioned parents to not allow their children to view the film. The film's producers also expressed surprise at the rating and stated that they would not recommend Cub be viewed by anyone under the age of 14. English language reviewers have written predominantly positive reviews for Cub, and Dread Central and Bloody Disgusting both praised it for its characters while stating that the film did have some weaknesses in its later half. Variety gave a mostly positive review, commenting that they would have liked to have seen more character building for the characters of the poacher, his son, and Sam but that Karakatsanis’ overall filming technique was impressive.

SamSam - Michael Sam - Netflix

Michael Alan Sam, Jr. (born January 7, 1990) is a former American football defensive end. He played college football for the University of Missouri and was drafted by the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League (NFL) in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft. Sam was a consensus All-American and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Defensive Player of the Year as a senior at Missouri. After completing his college football career, Sam publicly came out as gay. He became the first publicly gay player to be drafted in the NFL. The Rams cut him during the final preseason roster cutdowns. He also spent time on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad before being waived. He signed with the Montreal Alouettes before the 2015 season, and became the first publicly gay player to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

SamSam - College career - Netflix

Sam accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Missouri (Mizzou), after he was recruited by Craig Kuligowski, the team's defensive line coach. Kuligowski recruited other players near Hitchcock, which made him familiar with Sam. Sam attended the school from 2009 to 2013. He played for the Tigers, competing in the Big 12 Conference. He redshirted in his first year at Missouri, and recorded 3.5 quarterback sacks, 24 tackles, including seven tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, one interception and one blocked kick as a redshirt freshman. In his sophomore year, Sam intercepted a tipped pass in a game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders, which secured a victory to make Mizzou bowl eligible. In 2012, Mizzou transferred to the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Sam registered 3 1⁄2 sacks while starting in nine of the team's games. As a senior in 2013, Sam recorded 11.5 quarterback sacks and 19 tackles for a loss. He led the SEC in both categories, and tied Missouri's single-season record for sacks. He was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week in two consecutive weeks, after recording three sacks apiece in games against the Arkansas State Red Wolves and the Vanderbilt Commodores. After the season, Sam was named the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, with C. J. Mosley of the University of Alabama, and a first-team all-SEC selection. Sam was named a first-team All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, Associated Press, Sporting News, the American Football Coaches Association, and the Football Writers Association of America. He was also named a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Hendricks Award, and the Lombardi Award. Missouri played in the 2014 Cotton Bowl Classic, in which Sam forced a fumble that was returned for a touchdown, securing Missouri's victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. During his college career, Sam accumulated 123 tackles, including 36 for loss, 21 sacks, six forced fumbles and two intercepted passes. He graduated from Missouri in December 2013. He participated in the 2014 Senior Bowl in January 2014; considered too small to play as a defensive end in the National Football League (NFL), he played as an outside linebacker. Sam struggled at the new position.

Hier zijn de Van Rossems - Maarten van Rossem - Netflix

Maarten van Rossem (born 24 October 1943) is a Dutch historian. He specializes in the history and politics of the United States. As an expert on America, he is a frequent guest on television political talk shows. His public career started when he was asked to comment on the 1984 vice presidential elections. He still makes regular TV appearances and gives frequent public lectures.

Hier zijn de Van Rossems - Biography - Netflix

Born in 1943 in Zeist, Van Rossem grew up in Wageningen (Netherlands). In his youth he became fascinated with the United States through a visit from his three American cousins. When they came to visit his parents, they each had their own photo camera with them. This led him to think all Americans were rich. He attended the grammar school in Wageningen, graduating in the exact sciences. Initially he studied pharmacy at Utrecht University, because of his high marks for chemistry. Because he disliked the subject, he secretly switched to studying history. His family opposed this decision, stating that this would only lead to unemployment. As a student in the 1960s, he was expected to be leftist and radical, but Maarten chose not to go in that direction. He thought it would be very unlikely that there would be a revolutionary revolt against capitalism. Despite being brought up in a liberal environment, he joined the Labour Party in 1967. He continued to be intrigued by the United States, collecting newspaper clippings on Martin Luther King, president Kennedy and the Chicago riots. After eight years he graduated Cum laude. He wrote his senior thesis about the historiography of the Cold War with Hermann von der Dunk as his thesis advisor. Through his thesis he discovered the joy of writing: “You can say that at that point I became a historian”. His PhD thesis on the Partisan Review was also counseled by Von der Dunk, who allowed him to change the subject twice. It took him 12 years to finish it. Only a year later, in 1984, he published his best-known book The United States in the 20th century (Dutch title: De Verenigde Staten in de Twintigste Eeuw). This got him an invitation to speak on television about the presidential elections. Since then he is often asked to speak at events, even though he is often criticized for being too cynical. In 1996 he was appointed professor occupying the endowed chair of modern history at the Utrecht University. This appointment allowed him to speak on a wider range of subjects. He was forced to retire from this position in 2008 because he reached retirement age. He thought this was ridiculous: “Yesterday I had a normal working day; today my activities are seen as no more than occupational therapy for the elderly, focused on stimulating the brain, in order to prevent its precipitate decline after receiving the first state pension cheque”, he said on his first day of retirement. He continues to give public lectures all around the country. The first issue of his own magazine, the Maarten!, was published in the summer of 2008. Initially a one time addition to the Historic Newspaper (Dutch: Historisch Nieuwsblad), the glossy magazine has since grown into its own, circulating on a bimonthly basis. Even though the format parodies personality magazines like Oprah Magazine, its content is serious, running editorials on current events and putting them against a historic background. In the summer of 2012 he toured the US in preparation of a documentary series on the 2012 presidential elections. During the 2012 Dutch general elections he was a “lijstduwer” for the Labour Party, which earned them 5.929 votes, ranking him the 16th most popular candidate.

We zijn weer thuis - De lachende scheerkwast - Netflix

De lachende scheerkwast (“The laughing shave brush”) is a Dutch television show written and directed by Wim T. Schippers, who also plays one of the lead characters, Jacques Plafond. It ran on VPRO television for six episodes in 1981 before being canceled, and then returned for another six episodes.

We zijn weer thuis - Legacy - Netflix

The show is praised for its influence on Dutch language and culture; many of its catchphrases and buzzwords found their way into the language and some of its fictional locations became real. The Dutch village Olst, for instance, named one of its parks for the show's Willy Dobbeplantsoen; Willy Dobbe, a Dutch TV announcer for the TROS broadcaster, stood for the petty bourgeois mentality the show made fun of. Dobbe herself was the guest of honor at the park's ten-year anniversary, which was attended by Schippers alumni such as Dolf Brouwers (Sjef van Oekel), Clous van Mechelen (Jan Vos), and Rob van Houten (Boy van Bensdorp). At the occasion, Olst's mayor, Tom Strien, indicated how controversial the show was since he was forbidden by his parents to watch it.

Groeten van Max - Plautdietsch language - Netflix

Plautdietsch ([ˈplɑtditʃ]) or Mennonite Low German, is a Low Prussian dialect of East Low German with Dutch influence that developed in the 16th and 17th centuries in the Vistula delta area of Royal Prussia. The term Plautdietsch literally translates to “Low German”, plaut meaning “flat” (referring to the plains of northern Germany), and the term Dietsch originally meaning “of the Tribe”, and referring to all the continental West Germanic peoples and their languages, i.e., Low German, Dutch and High German. In other Low German dialects, the word for Low German is usually realised as Plattdütsch [ˈplatdytʃ] or Plattdütsk [ˈplatdytsk], but the spelling Plautdietsch is used to refer specifically to the Vistula variant of the language. Plautdietsch, an East Low German dialect, was a German dialect like others until it was taken by Mennonite settlers to the south west of the Russian Empire starting in 1789. From there it evolved and subsequent waves of migration brought it to North America, starting in 1873, and mostly from there to Latin America starting in 1922. Plautdietsch is spoken by about 400,000 Russian Mennonites, most notably in the Latin American countries of Mexico, Bolivia, Paraguay, Belize, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, as well as in the United States and Canada (particularly Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario). Today Plautdietsch is spoken in two major dialects that trace their division to Ukraine. These two dialects are split between Chortitza Colony and Molotschna. Many younger Russian Mennonites in Canada and the United States today speak only English. For example, Homer Groening, the father of Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons), spoke Plautdietsch as a child in a Mennonite community in Saskatchewan in the 1920s, but Matt never learned the language. In 2007, Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas directed the film Stellet Licht (Silent Light), set in a Mennonite community in Chihuahua, Mexico. Most of the film's dialogue is in Plautdietsch, which some of the actors had to learn phonetically. Other parts were played by people of the local community.

Mennonite Low German shows similarity with High German in the word order. The basic word order is subject–verb–object as in English. Indirect objects precede direct objects as in English John gives Mary a present. But that is where similarities end. A dependent verb, i.e., an infinitive or past participle comes at the end of the sentence where in English it would be placed immediately after the main verb, as shown in the following: Mennonite Low German word order: Jehaun haft dän Desch jemoakt (John has the table made). English word order: John has made the table. Mennonite Low German, like High German has been referred to as verb-second (V2) word order. In embedded clauses, words relating to time or space, can be placed at the sentence's beginning, but then the subject has to move after the main verb to keep that verb in second position. This pattern is demonstrated here: Mennonite Low German word order: Nu sie ekj schaftich. More Examples: Dan jeef de Kjennich seine Deena eenen Befäl. (Then the king gave his servants an order) Also, effects tend to be placed last in the sentence. Example: En daut Kuffel wia soo väl Wota, daut et äwarand (In the cup, there was so much water, that it overflowed). Mennonite Low German has syntactic patterns not found in High German, or at least not as often, such as the repetition of a subject, by a pronoun. Example: Mien Hoot dee haft dree Akjen. My hat it has three corners. Questions, orders and exclamations have a verb first word order: Hast du daut oole Hus aun de fefte Gauss jeseenen? (Have you seen the old house on fifth street?). All questions are arranged like this. There is no auxiliary verb to form questions. If there is a question word, that word precedes the verb: Wua es dien Voda jebuaren (Where is your father born?). As in English, when using verbs in the imperative mood, it is not necessary to specify the person addressed, but it can be added for emphasis: Brinj (du) mie emol dän Homa (Please, (you,) bring the hammer to me). The word emol is frequently asked to soften the order as a word for please. Example of an exclamation: Es daut vondoag oba kolt! (Is it cold today!). Dependent clauses As in High German, in dependent clauses, the verb goes at the end: Ekj well morjen miene Mutta besieekjen, wan ekj Tiet hab. (I want to visit my mother tomorrow if I have time). Observe the construction of: if I have time. However, when a dependent clause has an infinitive or past participle, this rule is no longer strictly applied; there is a strong tendency to move the finite (main) verb before the infinitive or participle, the direct object (or even a long circumstantial complement): Example: German word order requires a sentence structure like: Hee fruach mie, auf ekj miene Mutta jistren daut Jelt jejäft haud. (Translation: He asked me if I had given the money yesterday to my mother.) Even though this sounds right and perfectly understandable, most speakers would rearrange these same words as follows: Hee fruach mie, auf ekj miene Mutta jistren haud daut Jelt jejäft. Another example: Hee sajcht, daut sien Brooda jrod no de Staut jefoaren es/ Hee sajcht, daut sien Brooda jrod es no de Staut jefoaren (He says that his brother has just gone to the city). Observe: the verb precedes a prepositional phrase, but an adverb is still placed before it.

Noord Zuid - Amsterdam Zuid station - Netflix

Amsterdam Zuid is a railway station situated in the borough of Amsterdam-Zuid in Amsterdam, Netherlands. For a number of years, it was named Amsterdam Zuid WTC, in reference to the neighbouring World Trade Center Amsterdam. During 2006, in conjunction with the rapid development of the area surrounding the station, the station was enlarged and the reference to the WTC was formally dropped from the name. During 1978, Amsterdam Zuid station opened on a strategic rail route commonly known as the Zuidtak and formed the heart of the modern Zuidas business district, which houses several large banks, accounting and legal firms, as well as being the main public transport gateway for the VU University campus located just south of the station. Over time, the station has played an increasingly important role in Amsterdam's transport strategy and passenger numbers have grown extensively since its opening. To cope with its high patronage, Amsterdam Zuid has been extended and additional services put on; it has effectively replaced the older Amsterdam Centraal station as the capital's main station for direct trains. During the 2010s, as a means of allowing for further development at the station, a large expansion plan was proposed for Amsterdam Zuid. During December 2014, an agreement for this expansion plan, which has been referred to as the Zuidasdok project, was signed by various public bodies, authorising it to proceed. The publicly-funded project has an estimated cost of approximately €1.9 billion; this price tag means it shall be one of the biggest infrastructure projects ever performed in the Netherlands to date. Having received political backing, construction to scheduled to commence during 2019 and is scheduled for completion around 2028.

De Troon - Gordon Brown (rugby union) - Netflix

Gordon Lamont Brown (1 November 1947 - 19 March 2001) was a Scottish international rugby union footballer. He was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2001. He was also an inductee to the Scottish Rugby Union Hall of Fame in 2010. And, The World Rugby Hall of Fame at a ceremony at Wembley during the Rugby World Cup 2015. His nickname was Broon frae Troon (i.e. Brown from Troon) after his home town in west central Scotland. Brown played second row for West of Scotland, Scotland and the British Lions. He is often considered “Scotland's greatest second row”. He was the younger brother of Peter Brown, the son of footballer John Brown, and the nephew of footballers Tom and Jim Brown. Richard Bath writes of him:

A buoyant larger-than-life figure, Brown was an abrasive steamroller of a lock. Unmoveable in the scrum and unfailingly sure on his own ball at the line-out, he also displayed a dynamism in the loose [play] and an ability to look after himself when the going got tough. At 6ft 5in. and over 17 stone, Brown had trouble maintaining peak fitness, so it was hardly surprising his greatest moments came on tour.

De Troon - Family - Netflix

They inherited sporting ability, for their father was an international goalkeeper. They were both big, the young Gordon, being at 6 feet 5 inches a couple of inches the taller, and they were both natural ball-players. There the resemblance stopped: Gordon's play could have been recorded on film and used to educate any aspirant lock-forward. He was exemplary in his orthodoxy. Peter was an individualist, eccentric, surprising and brilliant. Not surprisingly he was a great Sevens player: I don't think Gordon shone at the short game. I doubt if it could rouse him sufficiently.

Brown was from a sporting family, his elder brother Peter also played for and captained the Scottish side. His father, John played goalkeeper for the Scottish football side and also appeared in the Scottish Open at Royal Troon alongside golfing greats such as Arnold Palmer. He is also the nephew of footballers Tom and Jim Brown. Speaking of the brothers Brown, he thinks their skill was in their genes, but that Peter and Gordon were very different:

Clinch - Fort Clinch - Netflix

Fort Clinch is a 19th-century masonry coastal fortification, built as part of the Third System of seacoast defense conceived by the United States. It is located on a peninsula near the northernmost point of Amelia Island in Nassau County, Florida. The fort lies to the northeast of Fernandina Beach at the entrance to the Cumberland Sound (Florida), in the northeast part of the state. Today it is included within the boundaries of Fort Clinch State Park.

Clinch - History - Netflix

This site was first fortified in 1736 by the Spanish, when they held colonies in Florida. From 1736, various nations to control the territory have garrisoned and fortified this site to protect the entrance to the St. Marys River and Cumberland Sound. After the end of the Second Seminole War, the United States started construction of a fort, later named Fort Clinch, in 1847. It was part of its Third System of coastal defenses conceived earlier in the century, which guided fortifications throughout this period. The fortified compound is pentagonal in shape, with both inner and outer walls, and consists of almost five million bricks. There are corner bastions and embrasures in the outer walls and several structures in the interior courtyards, including a two-story barracks. The fort was named in honor of General Duncan Lamont Clinch after his death in 1849. General Clinch fought in the War of 1812 and was an important figure in the First and Second Seminole Wars. Confederate forces seized the fort in early 1861. It was used as a safe haven for Confederate blockade runners during the first year of the Civil War. However, changes in technology, specifically, the development of rifled cannon, had improved weaponry to the point that the fort's brick walls were vulnerable to attacks and thus obsolete. In March 1862 General Robert E. Lee ordered abandonment of the fort in order to use scarce troops in other areas. Federal troops re-occupied the fort in early 1862, taking control of the adjacent Georgia and Florida coasts. They used the fort as the base of Union operations in the area throughout the Civil War. The fort was placed on caretaker status in 1869; it remained so until 1898, when the Army garrisoned it during the short Spanish–American War. In September of that year, the Army abandoned it again. The fort gradually deteriorated. During the Great Depression, workers of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began restoration of the fort during the 1930s. It was restored to the Civil War era. In 1935, the State of Florida bought 256 acres (1.0 km2) that included the then-abandoned fort and the surrounding area. Fort Clinch State Park including the fort, opened to the public in 1938. The fort was closed to the public during World War II and used as a communications and security post. It was re-opened to public visits after the war ended. The fort was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is interpreted largely in terms of its use as a base of Union operations during the American Civil War. State Park personnel reenact military life at the fort, which is open from 8:00am until sundown, year-round.

Rot Op Naar Je Eigen Land - Rot op met je religie - Netflix

Rot op met je religie (English: To Hell With Your Religion) is a 2017 Dutch television series by the Evangelische Omroep, presented by Kefah Allush.

Rot Op Naar Je Eigen Land - Reception - Netflix

Stichting KijkOnderzoek, a ratings tracking service, reported that about 531,000 people watched the first episode. According to NRC Handelsblad, the EO used the programme to deliberately fan the flames of religious stress, and by their selection of participants created an unfair representation of the various worldviews: “The casting wants us to primarily look for reasonableness amongst the four religious participants (...). Even the two non-believers clash occasionally, because one is vegan and the other finds that to be politically correct bullshit. In short: in the first episode, the religious stress isn't quite fairly distributed yet between the followers of God and those who reject the existence of the fairytale character of god.” After three episodes, de Volkskrant, too, concluded that “the EO does everything within their power to let all hell break loose. There is no live and let live.” Just like in the previous Rot op series, the programme would primarily be “about confrontation, heated discussions and perhaps a vain hope of reconciliation.” It noted that the most fierce nonbeliever, Floris, “is portrayed the least sympathetic by the montage so far.” On the preview of the fourth episode, in which Safeer shows his unease when meeting a gay Muslim, the newspaper's reviewer (referencing Genesis 1:4) commented: “Someone saw the announcement, and saw it was not good. Stress!” A critic from ThePostOnline disagreed with the Volkskrant's criticism of the montage: “By definition, media select that which is appetising.” On the contrary, 'sensational television' is interesting, especially to discover who 'understands the art of living and tolerance best'. In his opinion, the atheist and vegan Floris, “whose raised voice against his religious fellow man may go into Dutch television history as legendary”, drawing the comparison to the late politician Pim Fortuyn, finishes last in this regard, followed by the imam Safeer, whilst sympathy for the atheist Bryan is growing throughout the series, and the Jewish Sheila has had the audience's sympathy from the beginning. Furthermore, the EO allegedly lacked a sense of humour, and the idea of 'let it be' would only rarely feature in the show.

A cult film, also commonly referred to as a cult classic, is a film with a cult following, obscure or unpopular with mainstream audiences, and often revolutionary or ironically enjoyed. Cult films are defined as much by audience reaction as they are content. Following is a list of cult films organized alphabetically by name:

De Zevensprong - Eindhoven - Netflix

Eindhoven (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɛi̯ntɦoːvə(n)] ( listen)) is a municipality and city in the south of the Netherlands, originally at the confluence of the Dommel and Gender streams. The Gender was dammed short of the city centre in the 1950s and the Dommel still runs through the city. The city has a population of 223,220 in January 2015, making it the fifth-largest municipality of the Netherlands and the largest in the province of North Brabant. Neighbouring cities and towns include Son en Breugel, Nuenen, Geldrop-Mierlo, Heeze-Leende, Waalre, Veldhoven, Eersel, Oirschot and Best. The agglomeration has a population of 337,487. The metropolitan area consists of 419,045 inhabitants. The city region has a population of 753,426. Also, Eindhoven is located in the Brabantse Stedenrij, a combined metropolitan area with about 2 million inhabitants.

De Zevensprong - Mayor - Netflix

The mayors of the Netherlands are not elected but appointed by the crown. Nevertheless, there has been a movement over the last few years to give the municipalities more say in who will be their mayor, which has resulted in consultative referenda being held in the larger cities to “suggest” a candidate for the post. This was also tried in Eindhoven and as a result the current mayor is Rob van Gijzel (PvdA). On 23 January 2008, a referendum to elect a mayor was held in Eindhoven. This referendum, the second of its kind in the Netherlands, was attended by 24.6% of the inhabitants. This was less than the required 30% needed to make a referendum binding. Nevertheless, the city council would choose the winner of the referendum as the preferred candidate. The main reason for the low attendance was that the candidates, Leen Verbeek and Rob van Gijzel, were from the same party. Rob van Gijzel won the referendum with 61.8% of the votes and was appointed the city's new mayor. The mayor is the chairman of the Council of B&W. He also has responsibility for a number of specific posts (like the aldermen). In the current council, mayor Van Gijzel holds responsibility for the following posts: Communication If unavailable, the mayor is temporarily replaced by one of the aldermen.

De Recherche - Research and Intervention Brigade - Netflix

A Research and Intervention Brigade (or Investigation and Intervention Brigade), commonly abbreviated BRI ( pronunciation ) (French: Brigade de Recherche et d'Intervention), often called “Anti-Gang Brigade”, is a unit of the French National Police. BRIs specialise in serious criminal cases such as armed robbery and kidnappings. They typically attempt to catch offenders in the act after monitoring their activities, a technique that was first experimented in the 1960s by the then-new Paris BRI. They use a mix of traditional techniques and modern technology to collect and archive data about banditry. Although most of the pictures illustrating this article show uniformed officers (of the Paris BRI-PP) during a hostage-rescue public demonstation, most BRI missions are undertaken by plainclothed officers. There are now more than 15 BRI units, located in France's major cities. The first of them, the Paris BRI (or BRI-PP for Préfecture de Police), was created in 1964. In 1972, in the wake of the Munich massacre, it was decided that BRI-PP would, as an additional task, form the nucleus of a SWAT task force known as Brigade Anticommando (Counter-commando Brigade) or BRI-BAC. BRI-BAC, when activated, is reinforced by other specialised units of the Préfecture de police. It has been involved in the resolution of hostage crises from its beginnings in the early 1970s to the Porte de Vincennes siege in January 2015 and the “Bataclan” assault during the November 2015 Paris attacks. In the Porte de Vincennes case, BRI-BAC and the National Police's RAID operated together as part of the National Police Intervention Force (French: Force d'Intervention de la Police nationale or FIPN).

In Therapie - Mask - Netflix

A mask is an object normally worn on the face, typically for protection, disguise, performance, or entertainment. Masks have been used since antiquity for both ceremonial and practical purposes. They are usually worn on the face, although they may also be positioned for effect elsewhere on the wearer's body. In parts of Australia, giant totem masks cover the body, while Inuit women use finger masks during storytelling and dancing.

In Therapie - Africa - Netflix

Many African masks represent animals. Some African tribes believe that the animal masks can help them communicate with the spirits who live in forests or open savannas. People of Burkina Faso known as the Bwa and Nuna call to the spirit to stop destruction. The Dogon of Mali have complex religions that also have animal masks. Their three main cults use seventy-eight different types of masks. Most of the ceremonies of the Dogon culture are secret, although the antelope dance is shown to non-Dogons. The antelope masks are rough rectangular boxes with several horns coming out of the top. The Dogons are expert agriculturists and the antelope symbolizes a hard working farmer. Another culture that has a very rich agricultural tradition is the Bamana people of Mali. The antelope (called Chiwara) is believed to have taught man the secrets of agriculture. Although the Dogons and Bamana people both believe the antelope symbolises agriculture, they interpret elements the masks differently. To the Bamana people, swords represent the sprouting of grain. Masks may also indicate a culture's ideal of feminine beauty. The masks of Punu of Gabon have highly arched eyebrows, almost almond-shaped eyes and a narrow chin. The raised strip running from both sides of the nose to the ears represent jewellery. Dark black hairstyle, tops the mask off. The whiteness of the face represent the whiteness and beauty of the spirit world. Only men wear the masks and perform the dances with high stilts despite the masks representing women. One of the most beautiful representations of female beauty is the Idia's Mask of Benin in present-day Edo State of Nigeria. It is believed to have been commissioned by a king of Benin in memory of his mother. To honor his dead mother, the king wore the mask on his hip during special ceremonies. The Senoufo people of the Ivory Coast represent tranquility by making masks with eyes half-shut and lines drawn near the mouth. The Temne of Sierra Leone use masks with small eyes and mouths to represent humility and humbleness. They represent wisdom by making bulging forehead. Other masks that have exaggerated long faces and broad foreheads symbolize the soberness of one's duty that comes with power. War masks are also popular. The Grebo of the Ivory Coast and Liberia carve masks with round eyes to represent alertness and anger, with the straight nose to represent unwillingness to retreat.

Today, the qualities of African art are beginning to be more understood and appreciated. However, most African masks are now being produced for the tourist trade. Although they often show skilled craftsmanship, they nearly always lack the spiritual character of the traditional tribal masks.

There are a wide variety of masks used in Africa. In West Africa, masks are used in masquerades that form part of religious ceremonies enacted to communicate with spirits and ancestors. Examples are the masquerades of the Yoruba, Igbo, and Edo cultures, including Egungun Masquerades and Northern Edo Masquerades. The masks are usually carved with an extraordinary skill and variety by artists who will usually have received their training as an apprentice to a master carver - frequently it is a tradition that has been passed down within a family through many generations. Such an artist holds a respected position in tribal society because of the work that he or she creates, embodying not only complex craft techniques but also spiritual/social and symbolic knowledge. African masks are also used in the Mas or Masquerade of the Caribbean Carnival. Djolé (also known as Jolé or Yolé) is a mask-dance from Temine people in Sierra Leone. Males wear the mask, although it does depict a female.

Achter de Rug - A. den Doolaard - Netflix

A. den Doolaard ([aː ʔdɛnˈdoːlaːrt], Macedonian: А. ден Долард, A. den Dolard, [ˈaʔ dɛnˈdɔlart], Zwolle, February 7, 1901 – Hoenderloo, June 26, 1994) is the pseudonym of the Dutch writer and journalist Cornelis Johannes George (Bob) Spoelstra Jr.

Achter de Rug - Biography - Netflix

Den Doolaard went to high school in The Hague. After the death of his father he worked as an accountant with the Batavian Petroleum Company (from 1920 to 1928). In 1926 he made his debut with a collection of poems. In 1928 he terminated his job and started a number of wanderings through the Balkans and France, where he had several jobs such as mason, grape picker, farm worker and longshoreman. He incorporated the experiences gained during his wanderings in novels and newspaper articles. In 1939, the Dutch magazine Wij published as a serial his historical novella Dolken en rozenkransen (Daggers and rosaries), about the murder of the Yugoslav king Alexander in October 1934 in Marseilles. Very early, den Doolaard published warning articles against the rising fascism. A number of critical articles that he wrote for the Dutch daily newspaper Het Volk about totalitarian countries was bundled in 1937 in Swastika over Europa - een grote reportage (The Swastika over Europe - a major report). These anti-Nazi articles resulted into expulsion from Italy, Austria and Germany. The German daily Völkische Beobachter accused Den Doolaard of “libelous reporting”. From the edition of a thousand copies, the approximately 500 unsold copies were destroyed by publisher Querido in May 1940, when the German army invaded the Netherlands and he and his wife fled to the south. They eventually succeeded in reaching England as Engelandvaarder, after spending nearly a year in France. In London he worked for the Dutch radio broadcasting station Radio Oranje and often delivered speeches to the Dutch people under German occupation, encouraging resistance. After the Second World War, den Doolaard returned to the Netherlands. From 1954 he lived in Hoenderloo.

De Zwarte Lijst - Douwe Dabbert - Netflix

Douwe Dabbert is a Dutch fantasy comics series by artist Piet Wijn and scenarist Thom Roep. It was published between 1975 and 2001.

De Zwarte Lijst - List of characters - Netflix

Douwe Dabbert: The series' protagonist. He is a small bearded man who has the appearance of a gnome. He might be one himself, seeing that at the start of one story, “Het Bedrog van Balthasar”, he is seen saying goodbye to Paulus the woodgnome, a character from another comics series, who almost has the same size as him. Furthermore, Douwe has a magical knapsack from which only he can conjure items that are helpful in any situation. When others try to use it to their own advantage the bag only produces water, sand or nothing at all. Dabbert is depicted as a roaming traveller. We never learn anything about his family, except that he inherited his knapsack from his grandfather. His name is alliterative because the publishers of Donald Duck felt this was in line with their other titles. The name “Dabbert” was thought up when thinking of the wardrobe of Sinterklaas, which is called a “tabberd” in Dutch. Pief: Pief is a sorcerer's apprentice. He thinks he is quite a master in magic, but still makes a lot of mistakes. Douwe acts like a father figure to him. Domoli: Pief's nephew. He is an obese little sorcerer's apprentice who is only interested in food. Kijfje: Pief's niece and Domoli's sister. She is a slender and somewhat crabby girl. Ludo Lafhart: A crook who wants to become rich. He is one of Douwe's most recurring antagonists, appearing in the albums “De Verwende Prinses” (“The Spoiled Princess”), “Het Verborgen Dierenrijk” (“The Hidden Animal Kingdom”) and “Het Monster van het Mistmeer” (“The Monster of the Misty Lake”). Knudde: Lafhart's servant. He is depicted as his slightly more stupid sidekick. Wredulia: An evil witch who appears in the stories “De Poort naar oost” (“The Gate to East”) and “De Schacht naar noord” (“The Hallway to North”). Prinses Pauline: A spoiled princess who appears in the first story. She was originally meant as the protagonist, but after thirteen pages Dabbert makes his entry in the series and she is never seen again until the final album. Dodo: A dodo whom Douwe met at the North Pole, searching for a dodo egg. Finally, they find a dodo egg on a desert island, so the dodo can reproduce himself. He appears in “De Schacht naar het Noorden” en “De Weg naar het Westen”. Berendsz en Knielsen: Two sailors who try to steal Douwe's knapsack. They appear in “De zee naar zuid” (“The Sea to South”).

De pen & het zwaard - Morgan le Fay in popular culture - Netflix

The Matter of Britain character Morgan le Fay (often known as Morgana, and sometimes also as Morgaine and other names) has been featured many times in various works of in post-medieval and modern popular culture, often but not always appearing in villainous roles. Some modern stories merge Morgan's character with her sister Morgause or with aspects of Nimue (the Lady of the Lake). The stereotypical image of Morgan is often that of a villainess: usually a seductive, megalomaniacal, power-hungry sorceress who wishes to destroy Camelot and overthrow King Arthur, and is a fierce rival of the mage Merlin. Contemporary interpretations of the Arthurian myth sometimes assign to Morgan the role of seducing Arthur and giving birth to the wicked knight Mordred, though traditionally his mother was Morgause, Morgan's sister; in these works Mordred is often her pawn, used to bring about the end of the Arthurian age. Examples of modern Arthurian works featuring Morgan in a role a major antagonist include characters in both the DC Comics (Morgaine le Fey) and Marvel Comics (Morgan le Fay) comic book universes. Some other Arthurian fiction, however, casts Morgan in the various positive or at least more ambivalent roles, and some have her as a protagonist and sometimes a narrator.

Film student and would-be writer/director Nick Chapman, a native of the Midwest, finds himself the winner of a prestigious student film contest in LA. Overnight, Hollywood VIPs want to make deals with Nick. He settles on a quirky agent to represent him, and signs a deal with a major film studio to make his dream movie. Nick finds the Hollywood studio “process” distasteful, and is forced to make many creative compromises, but he now has money and meets fast, new Hollywood friends. Likewise, the now-affected Nick throws old friends overboard, as his instant success crowds out his old relationships, including that with his girlfriend, Susan. Nick's new world is suddenly turned upside down again when a new studio head decides to cancel his film project. Unable to strike any new film deals, college-educated Nick is reduced to entry-level jobs to pay the bills. Ultimately, a humbled and repentant Nick reunites with old friends, and with Susan, and carves an unexpected path to getting his film produced, this time on his terms.

Salamander - Axolotl - Netflix

The axolotl (, from Classical Nahuatl: āxōlōtl [aːˈʃoːloːtɬ] ( listen)) also known as a Mexican salamander (Ambystoma mexicanum) or a Mexican walking fish, is a neotenic salamander, closely related to the tiger salamander. Although the axolotl is colloquially known as a “walking fish”, it is not a fish, but an amphibian. The species originates from numerous lakes, such as Lake Xochimilco underlying Mexico City. Axolotls are unusual among amphibians in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. Instead of developing lungs and taking to the land, adults remain aquatic and gilled. Axolotls should not be confused with waterdogs, the larval stage of the closely related tiger salamanders (A. tigrinum and A. mavortium), which are widespread in much of North America and occasionally become neotenic. Neither should they be confused with mudpuppies (Necturus spp.), fully aquatic salamanders that are not closely related to the axolotl but bear a superficial resemblance. As of 2010, wild axolotls were near extinction due to urbanization in Mexico City and consequent water pollution, as well as the introduction of invasive species such as tilapia and perch. They are currently listed by CITES as an endangered species and by IUCN as critically endangered in the wild, with a decreasing population. Axolotls are used extensively in scientific research due to their ability to regenerate limbs. Axolotls were also sold as food in Mexican markets and were a staple in the Aztec diet. Surveys in 1998, 2003, and 2008 found 6,000, 1,000, and 100 axolotls per square kilometer in its Lake Xochimilco habitat, respectively. A four-month-long search in 2013, however, turned up no surviving individuals in the wild. Just a month later, two wild ones were spotted in a network of canals leading from Xochimilco. The city is currently working on conserving axolotls by building “axolotl shelters” and conserving remaining and potential habitats for the salamanders.

Salamander - Genome - Netflix

The 32 billion base pair long sequence of the axolotl's genome was published in 2018 and is the largest animal genome completed so far. It revealed species-specific gene pathways that may be responsible for limb regeneration. Although the axolotl genome is about 10 times as large as the human genome, it encodes a similar number of proteins, namely 23,251 (the human genome encodes about 20,000 proteins). The size difference is mostly explained by a large fraction of repetitive sequences, but such repeated elements also contribute to increased median intron sizes (22,759 bp) which are 13, 16 and 25 times that observed in human (1,750 bp), mouse (1,469 bp) and Tibetan frog (906 bp), respectively.

De Reünie - NPO 1 - Netflix

NPO 1 (formerly Nederland 1 Dutch pronunciation: [ˌneːdərlɑnt ˈeːn] until 2014) is the first national television station in the Netherlands, it launched on 2 October 1951. It provides public broadcasting and currently exists next to sister channels NPO 2 and NPO 3. A wide range of broadcasting organisations of the Publieke Omroep deliver programs. A wide variety of programs is broadcast on the channel, usually for larger audiences. In 2016, it was the most viewed channel in the Netherlands, reaching a market share of 21.9%.

De Reünie - Early Years, the 50s - Netflix

In the Netherlands the first television experiments took place in the 1930s. Dutch technology company Philips played an important role in these experiments. In 1951 public radio broadcasters AVRO, KRO, VARA and NCRV established the NTS, Nederlandse Televisie Stichting (Dutch Television Foundation). The very first public broadcast began from studio Irene in Bussum on 2 October 1951 at 8:15 pm. It was transmitted from Lopik, soon followed by Hilversum as well. On 5 January 1956 the NTS broadcast their first news programme, NTS Journaal. In the 1950s television attracted only a low number of viewers. The high prices of television sets were the main reason why. During the 1950s television became available nationally by the introduction of more transmitters and repeaters in Goes, Roosendaal, Loon op Zand, Mierlo, Roermond, Markelo, Ugchelen, Zwolle, Smilde and the new Gerbrandy Tower in IJsselstein.

't Is gebeurd - Politics of Belgium - Netflix

The politics of Belgium take place in the framework of a federal, representative democratic, constitutional monarchy. The King of the Belgians is the head of state, and the Prime Minister of Belgium is the head of government, in a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Federal legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of parliament, the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives. The federation is made up of (language-based) communities and (territorial) regions. Philippe is the seventh and current King of the Belgians, having ascended the throne on 21 July 2013. Since around 1970, the significant Belgian national political parties have split into distinct representations for each communities' interests, besides defense of their ideologies. These parties belong to three main political families, though all close to the centre: the right-wing Liberals, the social conservative Christian Democrats and the Socialists forming the left-wing. Other important newer parties are the Green parties and, nowadays mainly in Flanders, the nationalist and far-right parties. Politics is influenced by lobby groups, such as trade unions and employers' organizations such as the Federation of Belgian Enterprises. Majority rule is often superseded by a de facto confederal decision-making process where the minority (the French-speakers) enjoy important protections through specialty majorities (2/3 overall and majority in each of the 2 main communities). The Economist Intelligence Unit has rated Belgium as a “flawed democracy” in 2016.

't Is gebeurd - Political parties - Netflix

In Belgium, all important political parties are either Dutch-speaking (Flemish) or French-speaking, aside from a few minor German-speaking parties. Political parties are thus organised along community lines, especially for the two main communities. There are no representative parties active in both communities. Even in Brussels, all parties presenting candidates are either exclusively Dutch or French speaking. As such, the internal organisation of the political parties reflects a fundamental linguistic split in Belgian society. Another important characteristic of Belgian national politics is the highly federal nature of decision making. Important decisions require both a national majority (2/3 for constitutional changes), as well as majorities in the two main language groups. On top of that, both these communities can activate 'alarm bell'-procedures, delaying changes. In addition, there are no national parties to speak of. As a result of this, Belgian decision making can be slow and expensive. On top, it tends to significantly favour the more conservative parties. Given the historically very high public expenditure, and the very strict central control over taxation, even for revenues going to regions and communities, the tendency of Belgian governments to lower taxation and especially labour charges has been limited, at least if compared to radical-liberal approaches followed by certain other countries.

De Pappenheimers - Awards and recognition - Netflix

His most famous films The Alzheimer Case and Loft have been widely appreciated by the Flemish audience as well as by the Flemish critics, with Loft even being the best watched Flemish movie in theaters up to now. Loft has got a Dutch remake in the Netherlands which was also a success. This resulted in an American remake which was again highly liked by the Flemish audience and critics, but not by the American critics. The reason for Loft not being a success in the United States will be a cultural difference between the United States and Flanders/Netherlands. As Erik Van Looy pointed out in Flanders/Netherlands cheating on someone (by a male or a female) is not considered to be such a big deal (as long as you still love your partner), where in the US it caused the main characters to become all very unlikable to the American audience.

In February 2009, Lars Løkke Rasmussen was the chief negotiator in the political agreement behind a major tax reform, implementing the government's ambition of reducing income tax and increasing taxes on pollution. The reform was, according to Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the biggest reduction of the marginal tax rate since the introduction of the income tax in 1903. The opposition accused it of being historically skewed in favouring those with high-income jobs and giving very little to those with low-income jobs.
